What is your writing process like?

I start by making a list of 20 possibilities for the book and also listing the absolute worst things that can happen to my characters. After that, write the most vivid scenes and the loudest scenes first. After I have scenes written, I begin to formulate the plot. I use this Plot Checklist from Cheryl B. Klein’s book The Magic Words. This just helps me think strategically about my characters and their actions. Once I have an idea of the direction of the plot, I start writing in chronological order. With each draft, I go in and focus on a different element--sometimes I smooth the plot, sometimes it’s adding emotions. Just depends on what the book needs. My advice is to pay attention to how you write, what feels good, and what’s productive for you. Embrace your process, even if it feels messy.

What advice would you give new authors or someone who wants to be an author?

My advice is don’t lose the passion for your work. If you’re writing something or on the path of something that doesn’t make you feel empowered, maybe it’s time to reconsider where you’re headed. For me, I always want to feel good when I write because writing is my escape. It’s what makes me happy. Any time it stresses me out or makes me feel lesser, I know I’m doing something wrong.

How do you handle writer’s block?

If I feel stuck, I often call up a friend and talk out the issue. I’m someone who has to talk things out. Through this process, I usually find my solution. Sometimes, the answer comes quickly, sometimes it takes a lot longer. The point is, figure out how your brain works best--do you need to make lists? Do you need to mindmap? Or are you a talker like me? Also, there’s nothing a good night’s sleep can’t fix.
